Description du contenu de l'enseignement

Get a basic knowledge in surface chemistry and heterogeneous catalysis : ranging from the fundamental to a faced targeted reaction
  1. Structural and electronic properties of solid surfaces
    1. Thermodynamics : surface vs. Bulk
    2. Electronic properties of surfaces
    3. Structures of surfaces : Woods’ notation, Matrix notation, Relaxation, Reconstruction
    4. Surface characterization techniques : XPS, UPS, STM, AFM, TPD, TPR
  2. Fundamentals of adsorption and heterogeneous catalysis
    1. Definitions : physisorption, chemisorption, adsorption isotherms, reversibility principle, TOF / TON, conversion, Selectivity.
    2. Adsorption isoterms (Langmuir, Temkin, Frumkin, BET) ; Adsorption kinetics
    3. Kinetics of surface reactions
      ¿Elementary steps, external and internal mass transfer (Thiele-Weisz modulus), rate determining step, Langmuir-Hinshelwood, Eley-Rideal, Boudart (MASI : most abundant surface intermediate).
  3. Industrial Catalyst
    Types of Supports – active phase preparation (impregnations, coprecipitation, solgel), isoelectric point, SMSI
  4. Irational design of a catalyst
    Iterative process, methodology for characterisation (prior, during and after reaction).
  5. Zeolites and acid catalysis
    Synthesis routes, main catalytic applications, superacidity ; carbocations ; other solid acids ; mesoporous solids (SBA-15, M41S).

  • Fundamental basis of heterogeneous catalysis : active site, adsorption-desorption isotherms, conversion, selectivity
  • Main methods to prepare a catalyst : impregnation, co-precipitation, solgel…
